American sports programs
colleges and universities have come
much criticism
but it seems to be
the ability to change the system.
James A. Michener provides background information
information and comments on the subject.
First, the United States the only nation in the world, to my knowledge, which means that taking schools such as Harvard, Ohio State and Claremont, the responsibility for providing the public must Sports and Entertainment . We are a unique system that has no application to any penalty or other historic places. It is inconceivable that the University of Bologna, the oldest school and honorable, to provide scholarships to illiterate soccer players so they can talk to other northern Italian cities, and would be as absurd as the Sorbonne or Oxford will do so in their countries.
Our system is an American phenomenon, an accident of history that played out the exciting football games of the Yale and Harvard, developed, and to a lesser extent, Princeton and other schools in the last few years of the nineteenth century. If we had the team of professionals, public entertainment football, could not have placed the burden on our schools. But we had no pro teams, so that our schools are divided JOB
Second, when an American ideal education system is started again, few are willing to bear the responsibility, shows sports public. I certainly would not. But since then, by a quirk of history, is saddled, has solidified the tradition and do not see the remotest possibility of it changing. Therefore, approval was continued as long as certain safeguards are installed. Categorically, I believe our schools must continue to provide sports and entertainment, declined despite similar institutions around the world to do so.
Thirdly, I see nothing wrong with a college or university education for the young man or woman who wants to spend his whole life to the sport. My reasoning is twofold: 1) American society has determined that the sport should be an important aspect of our
his national life, with greater attention, an important financial support and a bigger presence in the media. How is it possible that one of the most important aspects of life, ignored by our schools? 2) If you can train young musicians and actors in our universities and offer to do large departments, why is it not equally legitimate to train young athletes and give them a stadium?
Fourth, because our schools volunteered to serve as a training ground for future professionals unpaid and because some lucky school with a reputation for good players a good amount can earn money to operate semi-professional football and basketball teams, the tempted to recruit young professionals in the games, but totally inappropriate for the scientific work is overwhelming. We must seriously ask ourselves whether this behavior is legitimate for an academic institution. The answers are honest, and I know some of them, but if we face this question open, we get in trouble.
